About the Author (From the Book Jacket

HUBERT F. GRIFFITH is well qualified to write of Russia and of the R.A.F. for he served as an Artillery Observation Officer in the Royal Flying Corps in the last war and during the present war he has served three years with Bomber, Fighter and Coastal Commands, and been on two expeditions-to France with the B.E.F. and to North Russia. He lived in Russia for some years between 1932-5 and wrote of his experiences in two successful books-"Seeing Soviet Russia " and " Play-time in Russia." In addition to these publications, Mr. Griffith has written various novels, travel books and important works of criticism which have earned high praise. He has been a contributor to the Observer and Manchester Guardian, and was dramatic critic of the Evening Standard for several years.

FOREWORD

TO

" R.A.F. IN RUSSIA "

BY WING-COMMANDER H. N. G. ISHERWOOD,

D.F.C., A.F.C., ORDER OF LENIN.

ALTHOUGH I am unaware of the exact contents of Flight-Lieutenant Griffith's book, I can say that should it be as interesting and entertaining as the diary which he kept out in Russia, it will make good reading.

If in his book he had praised the spirit of our own fighter-boys and of the Russian pilots, and indicated that the friendliness and co-operation that we received all the time out there was extremely warm and successful —he is stating only the bare truth.

The attention to detail and the trouble that the Russians took on our behalf were astonishing, and form a model of how aid can be given to such an expedition.

This fine spirit of co-operation - and the adaptability of the R.A.F. wherever they go - did much to make a success of the whole episode.
