US Navy: Naval Aviation Doctrine: Introduction to Naval Aviation, 1946

INTRODUCTION TO NAVAL AVIATION  - RESTRICTED - ISSUED BY AVIATION TRAINING DIVISION OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS U. S. NAVY. * JANUARY 1946 * OPNAV 33-NY-85; Chapter IX. Tactics and Flight Operations.

A few words by the web-master. "Introduction to Naval Aviation" is certainly not a "Doctrine" document in its true sense. However it does a very good job portraying US Naval Aviation tactical doctrine and operations at the end of WWII.  The whole hard bound volume of some 350 pages - profusely illustrated throughout - was classified "Restricted" at the time of publication; i.e. not accessible to readers outside the services. In a way it is an - early - attempt to assess the role of Naval Aviation in WWII and its achievements after victory was secured.

Foreword:

The material contained in this publication is of general nature and applies to Naval Aviation through October 1945. No attempt has been made to include matter of secret nature, although it is probable many techniques and instruments of naval flying now secret may become public knowledge in the predictable future. Many other subjects of naval research also may supplement or supplant procedures and materials standard at the time of this writing. These are matters for study at the discretion of the instructor, or by reason of the interest and desire for research on the part of the student. However, in following the progress of U. S. Naval Aviation through the end of World War II, this volume presents the history, methods, and techniques of our Fleet Air Forces in achieving the greatest victory in history under conditions and circumstances never before confronting any Navy.
